Plastic Injection Mold Development Process
- 01Project Requirement Confirmation
- Communicate with the client regarding product design requirements (dimensions, appearance, functions, materials, and estimated production volume).
- Confirm product usage environment (heat resistance, chemical resistance, structural strength, etc.).
- Define project timeline and budget for mold development.
- 02Product Design & Feasibility Analysis
- Obtain 3D files from the client or create CAD models internally.
- Conduct DFM (Design for Manufacturability) review: check draft angles, wall thickness, parting lines, shrinkage, and ejection method.
- Perform flow simulation (Moldflow/CAE) if necessary to predict filling, warpage, and cooling issues.
- 03Mold Design
- Decide mold structure (single/multi-cavity, hot runner or cold runner).
- Design gates, runners, cooling system, and ejection mechanism.
- Prepare 2D assembly drawings and 3D models for internal or client approval.
- 04Mold Manufacturin
- Material procurement: mold steel, mold base, etc.
- Machining processes: milling, turning, EDM, wire cutting, grinding, etc.
- Heat treatment: enhance hardness and wear resistance.
- Polishing & texturing: achieve required surface finish.
- 05Mold Assembly & Adjustmen
- Assemble mold components.
- Check fitting accuracy, clearance, and tolerance.
- Ensure cooling channels and ejection system function properly.
- 06Trial Molding (T0/T1/T2)
- T0: initial trial to check flow, appearance, and shrinkage.
- T1/T2: iterative mold modifications and improvements.
- Verify product dimensions, appearance, and functionality.
- 07Mold Validation & Pre-Production
- Conduct pilot production runs to test durability and stability.
- Confirm cycle time, yield rate, and dimensional stability.
- 08Mold Delivery & Mass Production
- Deliver mold to customer or transfer into production line.
- Establish mold maintenance plan (cleaning, lubrication, regular inspection).

Q&A
Q1 : What information is required to provide a product quotation?
A1:Please provide 3D drawings (STEP/IGS), 2D dimensional drawings, material requirements, estimated production volume, surface finish requirements, and expected delivery schedule.
Q2 : How long is the development lead time from design to trial molding?
A2:The typical development cycle is about 30–45 working days, depending on product complexity and the number of design revisions.
Q3 : How many shots can this mold produce? Is there any guarantee on mold lifetime?
A3:Mold life depends on the steel material and maintenance. Typically, it ranges from 300,000 to 1,000,000 shots, with a lifetime guarantee available.
Q4 : Can the mold be modified if the product design changes? Who will handle future maintenance?
A4:In most cases, the mold can be modified to meet new design requirements, and we can provide ongoing maintenance and technical support.
Q5 : After the mold is completed, can you support mass production? Do you provide after-sales technical support?
A5:Yes, we can provide trial runs, small-lot, and mass production services, along with continuous technical support and mold maintenance recommendations.
Plastic Injection Mold Machining Process
- 01Material Preparation
- Select suitable mold steel (e.g., P20, H13, NAK80, etc.).
- Steel cutting and rough sizing.
- 02Rough Machining
- CNC Milling / Machining Center: rough milling of cavities and mold base.
- Lathe: machining round parts (e.g., ejector pins, sleeves).
- Drilling Machine: cooling channels, screw holes, guide pin holes.
- 03Finish Machining
- CNC Finish Milling: detailed cavity and core machining.
- Grinding Machine: finishing flat surfaces, guide surfaces, and parting lines.
- High-speed / 5-axis Machining (if required): machining complex surfaces.
- 04Special Machining
- EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining): deep grooves, sharp corners, complex shapes.
- Wire Cut EDM: high-precision inserts, fine structures.
- 05Heat Treatment
- Improve hardness and wear resistance of mold steel (quenching, tempering, nitriding).
- 06Surface Treatment
- Polishing: ensure smooth finish or transparency for optical parts.
- Sand Blasting: matte or anti-glare effect.
- Etching / Texturing (Grain Processing): leather grain, decorative surface finish.
- 07Inspection & Adjustment
- Dimensional inspection and fine-tuning to ensure conformity with drawings.
- 08Assembly & Pre-Trial Adjustment
- Assemble mold core, cavities, and mold base.
- Conduct pre-trial checks before trial molding.
